GETTING AROUND
Excellent public transport links include a direct rail service to London Paddington with inter-city connections at Newton Abbot. The South Devon Highway gives good access to the vibrant cities of Exeter and Plymouth and the international airport at Exeter provides a gateway to destinations further afield.
Taxi ranks are conveniently located outside the coach and railway stations across the English Riviera. Torbay Taxis operates 365 days a year with six-, seven-, and eight-seater vehicles.
From the end of March until the end of October, regular ferries run between Torquay, Paignton, and Brixham, with a journey time of about 30 minutes. More information is available on the Dartmouth Rail River Company website or the We Ferry website. Daily boat trips also depart from Torquay and Brixham to Dartmouth, with the journey taking about an hour and a half each way.
THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
Torquay is a chic resort town with a distinctly continental feel, catering to a wide range of tastes. For watersports, fishing, and sailing, Torquay offers an excellent selection of beaches. In the evenings, enjoy fine dining, theatre, cinema, and star-studded shows suitable for all ages.
Torquay is also home to some of Devon’s top attractions, including Kents Cavern, the 800-year-old Torre Abbey with its Agatha Christie-inspired Potent Plants Garden, and Babbacombe Model Village. Step back in time as you wander through Cockington’s narrow lanes, a charming village with thatched houses dating back to the 16th century. You can also walk the Agatha Christie Mile and visit sites from her novels. Take a picturesque steam train to Kingswear and board a riverboat up the Dart to visit her stunning riverside estate at Greenway, managed by the National Trust.
With a car, you can enjoy a round of golf at Torquay Golf Club and discover nearby beaches like Torre Sands. Paignton, Goodrington Sands, and Broadsands are also close by. Visit Meadfoot Beach for sunbathing, crabbing, and lunch at the local café, or embark on a paddleboarding adventure at Anstey’s Cove.
Alternatively, take a ferry to historic Brixham Harbour (Dartmouth) and explore Berry Head National Nature Reserve, known for its colourful rare plants, or pick up fresh catches at the fish market.
Torquay is a true culinary destination. Try The Waddling Duck @ Hamiltons, the Cary Arms, Ollie’s, and The Orange Tree. For seafood, head to No.7 Fish Restaurant overlooking the marina, or indulge in Michelin-starred cuisine at The Elephant.
